We are covering
a golf tournament.
The partners
live inside it.
Dallas and Fort Worth already have the world we need. Honky tonks, big open country, and a cattle drive that moves through downtown Fort Worth every day of the year. Nothing here has to be built, it has to be pointed at, with the Lexus moving people through it. The tournament is the spine. The partners are not placed next to the story, they are inside the scenes it is made of.
This is a working ideation document across the three teams building it. Everything here is malleable, and it is written down so we can get to one direction Lexus signs off on.
Three teams,
one build.
This is being developed across three groups at once. Writing down where each piece comes from early keeps everyone building the same thing, so it sits at the front rather than the back.
The partner
Brand position, vehicle access and allocation, and the executives who go on camera. Tells us what the partnership needs to have said by the end of the weekend.
Strategy and channel
Keith and Jehan hold the partnership side and the distribution plan. Deliverable counts, formats and where each piece runs come from here, and we build to that list rather than inventing our own.
The world and the talent
The event, the field, the fits, and the culture the whole thing is borrowing. Also the team already shooting on the ground, which we plan around rather than duplicate.
Production and story
Creative POV, crew, capture, on site edit and delivery. We build the units, run the days, and hand back a tagged library everyone can pull from afterwards.
Dallas does not need a theme. It already has one.
Most brand golf content is shot in a vacuum. Same fairway, same drone push, same three second product cut. It could be anywhere, which is why none of it is memorable.
So we go and get the things that could only be here. Honky tonks that are real rooms with real nights in them. Open country outside the city. The cattle drive that runs through the Fort Worth stockyards every day. Boots, hats, dust, steel guitar, neon, all of it already standing.
The Lexus is what moves people through that world. It is already driving players to the course and already living on the property, which means it is the one brand element with a reason to be in every scene. Not placed next to the story. Carrying it.
None of it is a set piece. It is texture, gathered as b roll and cut through the films so the weekend reads as a place rather than a venue. That is the difference between content that could have been shot anywhere and content that could only have been shot here.
It works when a player posts it themselves before they get home.
The people on the property have audiences of their own. If the content is good and it is in their hands the same day, it goes out through them, and it reads as real rather than as an ad.
Which makes turnaround a creative decision, not a logistics one. Something delivered Tuesday is an asset. The same thing delivered while everyone is still together is a moment, and the moment is what gets reposted.
Every unit below is built to survive that test. If a piece cannot be cut and out the door before people leave Dallas, it has to earn its place some other way.
What this
looks like.
Not a shot list. The mood, the palette, the register. The fastest way for all three teams to be seeing the same weekend before anyone writes anything down.
Eight units,
one shoot.
Different ideas, not a locked slate. Everything here comes out of the same two days of capture, so nothing needs a second shoot. Labels are a first pass at priority, not a decision.
hero candidate
Welcome to Dallas
“This is where we are, and this is what it feels like.”
The kickoff piece we always open with, built here as a mini movie. Cars moving through the city and out onto the open country, the register set in the first ten seconds, the weekend given a real title sequence.
texture
Sense of Place
“You could not shoot this anywhere else.”
B roll that makes the films feel like Texas rather than a fairway. The stockyards drive, neon on a bar front, open country, dust and light. Gathered around the edges of the schedule and cut into everything.
series, repeatable
Car Confessionals
“Play the song you get pumped up to.”
Camera in the cabin on the ride in. A prediction on the round, a couple of questions, then the song. Funniest when the song does not match the player at all, which is the format, not an accident.
always on
The Arrival
“Fit check, out of the car.”
Red carpet energy at the drop off. Door opens, fit gets its moment, boots and hats in frame, car present without being sold. Fast, repeatable, vertical from the start.
brand film
Why Golf
“Here is what the partnership is actually for.”
Lexus leadership on camera on why Lexus is in this game and what Malbon adds to it, cut against the world we have built and the history of the course. The one asset carrying the argument.
night unit
Opening Night
“The weekend starts here, not on the first tee.”
A real honky tonk rather than a hospitality tent. Neon, felt, steel guitar, everyone meeting each other before a ball is hit. Every event film skips the night, and the night is where the personality is.
always on
Trunk Check
“What is actually in the bag.”
Staged out of the back of the car. Gear, fits, the small things people zoom in on. Quick to shoot, high completion, product as furniture rather than pitch.
recap
The Place
“Shot like a course, not a schedule.”
Course history plus the recap cut. Event films date fast when they are a running order. Told through the land and the people on it, they still play a year later.
open slot
Yours
“The one we have not thought of yet.”
Deliberately empty. Anyone from any of the three teams puts an idea here and we build the card out together in the next session.
The umbrella. Every one of these is somebody arriving somewhere they do not belong yet, and the car is how they get there. Riding In holds all of it, and it is a format that moves to the next stop without being reinvented.
Shoot once.
Cut for everywhere.
Lock the ride list first
Who is in which car, with whom, and when. The confessionals live or die on the pairing, and the pairing has to be built before the schedule hardens rather than after.
Scout the city before the call sheet
The stockyards drive runs on a fixed schedule and the honky tonks are real rooms with their own nights. Which ones we use, and when, has to be locked early. None of this is a look we apply in the grade.
Shoot the city and the country first
Welcome to Dallas plates, Fort Worth, and golden hour on the property. It buys the opening of every piece and costs one day at the front.
Run arrivals as a station
One position at the drop off, repeated all morning. Fit checks and trunk checks slot into the gaps between cars, so volume comes out of a fixed setup rather than chasing.
Capture in the cabin, not around it
Rigged interior, clean audio, one operator, in transit only. Nothing about this slows the day down or adds a vehicle to the convoy.
Shoot the opening party as its own film
The honky tonk night is not b roll for the recap. It is where everyone meets, and it sets the register for everything shot the next day. Crew does not wrap at last light.
Cut while the event is live
Editor on site, cards moving through the day. Selects out at lunch, the sizzle out in the transit window when everyone is together and on their phones.
Splinter it after
The social run is planned before the shoot rather than scavenged from it. Every cut points back to the hero, and the raw library gets handed over tagged.
One weekend feeding three different jobs.
All shot with the same feel whether it is lo fi, mid fi or hi fi, so nothing looks like it came from a different brand or a different weekend. This is the shape of what comes out of an event like this, so everyone can see where their piece sits in it.
lane 01
The hero
One commercial worthy film finished to a paid media standard, licensed music, full colour and sound pass. This is the piece that can carry a buy.
lane 02
The series
Confessionals, arrivals and the night unit cut as a run rather than one offs, so the format has a name and an audience learns to expect it at the next stop.
lane 03
Always on
Lo fi capture cut into short social, plus same day delivery into the hands of everyone who was there. Volume that keeps the partnership visible between the bigger drops.
The weekend does not end on Sunday.
Two days of capture leaves roughly a hundred hours of material behind, and most of it never gets seen again.
So the handover is a tagged, searchable library rather than a folder of finals. All three teams pull from it afterwards for retail, social, internal and partner needs, without anyone having to go asking for a file.
The register, the formats and the library also carry forward if this travels to another stop.
Agreed before we shoot, not after.
What we
decide together.
Four creative calls. None of them change the thinking, they change the shape of the weekend, and each one needs all three teams in the room.
One direction, approved by Lexus.
This page holds what we discussed. The job now is narrowing it into a single direction everyone has signed off on, so the build can start against something fixed.
what gets narrowed
Everything else stays malleable while those four get answered.
